Secrets Of The PSP Web Browser

None of the Examples below will apply to trying this on a PC, they only apply to the PSP browser.

First, we need to use this in our examples, so lets get that out of the way.

On your PSP enter the following web site:

http://testing.onlytherightanswers.com/pspkey2.htm

Now wait for this to load and when finished continue.

Many people do not understand how the PSP browser windows function, in fact, many people constantly re-load pages that are already in the browser memory, we will show you how to see if a page is in browser memory or not and many other things in this thread.

Using the Virtual keyboard type the word "browser" without the quotes and then click on the Google button.

This may or may not prompt you asking if you wish to open a new page, you will get prompted ONLY if you have other pages already taking up all your browsers tabs ("windows") you then would have a choice of using one of the currently open browser tabs ("windows") to open your new page.

If you had a unused browser tab ("window") you would not be prompted and the page would simply open.

If prompted pick one of your currently open tabs ("windows")

Now, you will notice that the Google search page is being currently displayed, and that the Virtual Keyboard and Browser seems gone at the moment.

This is Not true, Simply hold down your SQUARE key and use your left or right clear plastic key while still holding down your SQUARE key. You will see the Virtual Keyboard and Browser, if you do it again, you will see the Google page.

What's Happening?

Holding down the SQUARE key and using the clear plastic Keys allows you to Change tabs ("windows") so that you can have multiple windows open at the same time.

Now lets try something else. Again, Holding down the SQUARE key and using one of your clear plastic keys on the top of the PSP display the Virtual Keyboard and Browser.

On the Virtual Keyboard and Browser keyboard, click the clear button, the text that was there the word "browser" should be gone now.

Enter using the Virtual Keyboard and Browser

without the quotes ("Note: There are quick buttons that will type the » and the .com on the Virtual Keyboard and Browser so that you do not need to type this all.

Click the GO! button. You may or may not be prompted to open a new page, if you are and are given a list do NOT replace the Virtual Keyboard and Browser or the Google tab ("window") choose any other.

Now you will see MSN.com, But, both the Google Search and the Virtual Keyboard and Browser tabs are still there.

How do I get back to then?

Simple, do the same thing, hold down the SQUARE key and then use one of the clear plastic keys to get back to the Google search page or the Virtual Keyboard and browser page.

How do I REMOVE a tab ("window") from my browser memory?

OK, Use the SQUARE key and one of the clear plastic keys to get to the Google search page.

Once the Google search page is displayed click your TRIANGLE button, this will invoke the PSP Browser Toolbars. Using The TRIANGLE button again will close the PSP browser toolbars.

The Toolbar on top displays the web site address and the title of that web page.

The Toolbar on the bottom allows you to do many things, we will explore them all.

Once you have clicked your TRIANGLE key and have the PSP Browser toolbars displaying with the Google search page displaying as well, use your left arrow to go all the way to the left you will see the word "File" displayed.

Now, click on the File Icon, and you will see a menu, choose "Close Page", you will see that the top PSP Browser toolbar is now empty and that the page is BLANK.

This means that the page has been removed from your browser memory.

You can do this to free up memory when you had pages open and are getting memory errors trying to go to other pages. Click on the TRIANGLE key again to close the PSP browser toolbars
("Note: If the PSP Browser toolbars are open you can't change Browser tabs ("Windows)")

Simply hold down the SQUARE key and use the clear plastic keys to get back to the Virtual Keyboard and Browser.

OK Smart Guy, what if I am on a web page but want to open a link on that page in another tab?

Easy, by the way, Im not that smart ;-).

There are two ways, the simple way is to highlight the link and HOLD down the "X" key.

The other is use your arrow keys to highlight the link on the web page being displayed that you want to open in a NEW tab ("Window") then use your TRIANGLE key to open the PSP Browser toolbar, use your arrow keys to highlight the "File" icon on the PSP Browser toolbar and then use your "X" key, you will see a menu, scroll to "Open Link in Different Tab" click your "X" key and if there is a free tab "window" it will open automatically, otherwise it will prompt you to replace one of your current tabs ("windows") when it opens this link.

Hey this is neat, how can I make the Virtual Keyboard and Browser my Home page?

OK, very easy, make sure that the Virtual Keyboard and Browser is the current page being displayed.

Again, you can do this if it is not already being displayed by holding down the SQUARE key and using one of the clear plastic keys until the Virtual Keyboard and Browser is displayed.

Now, click on your TRIANGLE key to invoke the PSP browser toolbar, and use your left or right arrow key to get to the ICON which displays the word "Tools" click on it with your "X" key, then choose settings by clicking on it with your "X" key.

Now select "Home Page settings using your "X" key, using your down arrow key scroll down to "Use Current Page" and then click your "X" key. Then select "OK" and use your "X" key again.

Now The Virtual Keyboard and Browser is set to your Home page.

How do I save pictures?

OK, remember we closed the Google search tab ("window") but we should still have the MSN.com tab ("window") as well as the Virtual Keyboard and Browser tab ("window") still open.

So, hold down your SQUARE key and use on of the clear plastic keys ("On the Top of the PSP") until you have the MSN.com window displaying.

You should see a picture called "MSN SHOPPING" use your mouse to hover over the center of it, then click your TRIANGLE key, this will invoke the PSP Browser toolbar.

Use your Left arrow key to select the Icon that says "File" and then click your "X" key.

You should see a menu now.

Now scroll down to "Save Image" and then use your "X" key.

You will be prompted to save the image in "/PSP/PHOTO/" and the filename will be FSQVS-NU1_WZM...... you can change the destination or the file name by simply selecting it and using your "X" key.

You can now use your CIRCLE key to abort the save or use your "X" key to save the file.

WOW!

Can I save entire HTML pages, I mean a real web page?

Yes, first lets do some clean up, so we can free up some browser memory, make sure you still have the MSN.com page being displayed on your PSP. If not, then hold down your SQUARE key and use one of your clear plastic keys to get to the Browser tab ("window") that displays the MSN.com page.

Now, use you your TRIANGLE key to open the PSP Browser toolbar, use your left arrow key and select the "File" icon. Click your "X" key, you should see a menu, select "Close Page" and use your "X" key. The MSN.com page should now be removed from your browser memory.

Click the TRIANGLE key again to make the PSP Browser toolbar close.

Hold down your SQUARE key and use the clear plastic keys to get back to the Virtual Keyboard and Browser tab ("window").

Scroll down to the Copyright statement on the Virtual Keyboard and Browser, and use your "X" key.

This will open »testing.OnlyTheRightAnswers.com automatically.

Scroll down and highlight the link "See The English Version Here"

Now, CLICK your TRIANGLE key, this will open the PSP Browser toolbar.

Using your left arrow key, go to the Icon that says "file" and select "Save Link Target" then use your "X" key.

It will show a file name of "pspkey2.htm" and a destination of "/PSP/COMMON/" click your "X" button.

The file has been saved.

Now make sure the PSP browser toolbar is still open, if not, click the TRIANGLE button and select the Left Arrow Icon because we need to go back to the Virtual Keyboard and Browser.

Click on the Left Arrow Icon using your "X" key

Once the Virtual Keyboard and Browser is displayed. use the CLEAR button to remove the old text there.

Now using the Virtual Keyboard and Browser keys enter "file:/psp/common/pspkey2.htm" ("There are quick keys for the file:/ and .html") and then click the GO! button.

You have now opened the pspkey.htm file that you downloaded in this example and did it without the need of a USB cable.

Can I Bookmark things on my Memory Stick or just Web Pages?

Sure, remember that file we saved to file:/psp/common/pspkey2.htm well open it up using the Virtual Keyboard and Browser, use the clear button to remove any old text there, then enter "file:/psp/common/pspkey2.htm" without the quotes and click on the GO! button, this will open that file stored on your memory stick in another tab ("window") and now use your TRIANGLE key, use your left or right arrow to get to the Bookmark Icon, use your "X" key, a menu will appear, select "My Bookmarks" then select "Add To Bookmarks" using your "X" key. You now have a bookmark to a file stored on your memory stick.

What If I want to open a Bookmark in a new tab or overlay a tab I already have opened?

Just hold down your SQUARE key and use your left or right clear plastic key to go to a new tab ("Window") Note: Unused tabs ("windows") on the PSP Browser appear BLANK or go to the tab which already has a web page in it that you want to overlay with your Bookmark. Now simply click your TRIANGLE key to open the PSP Browser toolbar and then using your right or left arrow keys highlight the "Bookmarks" icon, click on your "X" key a menu will appear, select "My Bookmarks" then click your "X" key, scroll down to the bookmark you wish to open, click your "X" key and you now have your bookmark opened, leaving all your other tabs ("Windows") as they were.

Is there any simple way to get a single file from my PC to the PSP without the USB cable?

Yes, Actually 2 different methods. Depending on your Email Client, if it is web based, such as Yahoo for example, you can take ANY file you have on ANY PC and email it to yourself, yes yourself, with the file you wish to move to the PSP as an attachment in the Email.

Then simply open up your email on the PSP and highlight the attachment link and follow the instructions listed above in the "Can I save entire HTML pages, I mean a real web page?" section, you can do this with any file type. It can be useful if a friend has a file they wish to send you, or you just don't want the hassle of using the USB cable.

The second method is to post the file on a web site somewhere with a link to it, there are many places that will do this for free, or if you are lucky enough to have your own web site you can post it there with a link to it and then follow the same instructions from the "Can I save entire HTML pages, I mean a real web page?" section above.

What About Cache Size, and what is Cache anyway?

Cache is simply a pool of memory ("In This Case of the PSP Browser") that will store items you have used such as pictures so that when you go back to these web sites you do not need to have them sent over and over again.

For some reason, some people are saying turn cache off, this is NOT a good Idea, the cache size will not decrease your "Out Of Memory" errors in any way, this is a rumor.

To set cache to the largest size, click on your TRIANGLE key and using your right arrow key go to the "Tools" icon, Click on it using your "X" key, a menu will display, select "Settings" use your "X" key, scroll down and select "Cache Settings" use your "X" key, select whatever amount is there "Do Not Use, 512,1024 or 2048 using your "X" key, then using your UP/DOWN arrows select 2048, click your "X" key, then select "OK" and click your "X" key. Then click on The Circle Key, then click on your TRIANGLE key to remove the PSP Browser toolbar, and your cache settings have been set to the best size now.

I can't believe this, is there anything else I should know?

Always remember that PSP Browser Tabs ("Windows") do NOT close automatically, if you are getting MANY "Out Of Memory Error" check what Browser tabs ("Windows") you still have open. Do this again by holding down your SQUARE key and using your clear plastic keys. When you find an OLD page you want to close to gain back more browser memory, simply use your TRIANGLE key to open the PSP Browser toolbars, select the "File" icon on the bottom PSP Browser toolbar, and select the "Close Page" then use your "X" key, this will make sure that ALL possible available Browser memory is there for you to open pages you may be getting "Out Of Memory Errors" on without doing this.

There are some pages that are just too plain BIG to be displayed in the current PSP browser, so this will not solve ALL memory errors, hopefully, most major web sites will change their pages that are too big for the PSP in the near future.

We will post much more detail on browser functions, but we would like to have people ask questions so we can show similar examples of how to do things that people are confused about or may not even know about.

We hope this first installment of Explaining The Mysteries of The PSP Browser How To has helped and please ask any questions you may have.
